Interviews - Thursday

jess`: From my understanding, everyone in Thursday has been to college and is educated. Do you think that the band would be where it is if you didn't have that education backbone?
Steve: Actually, excluding me and Andrew, everyone's a college dropout. So yeah, we gotta figure out a way to be smart. ::laughs:: ..or try anyway!

jess`: So I guess I better go out and buy a Saturn Sky now... what's the story behind that?
Steve:It's always interesting in those situations. There are some people that want to because the father side of that is getting your music to new people. Obviously, music is communication. There definetely was an intensive conversation that some of us wanted to do and some of us didn't want to do. When you're in a band, you don't always see eye to eye but you have to compromise. We kind of run our band in a way where it's like if more people want to do it, it's cool. You know? We work it out. So it's kind of split on that one but we did a little bit of research and know that they're not a terrible company.

jess`: In the past year, what has influenced you the most and what effect did it have on the new record?
Steve: After touring for WATT, we just knew we needed a break and we took one. Having the time to actually have a "normal life" for a little while definetely helped us come together stronger for the new record and really break down some walls that we had creatively and helped us go in a lot of new directions. I think just acknowledging that we needed to be human beings again and not be these road dogs, like have relationships with friends and family and just be people again. I think that was the most important thing that influenced the record.

jess`: Speaking of family, you're going to be an uncle soon [with your bassist, Tim being your brother in law and all]... Boy/girl?
Steve: Girl.
jess`: Do they have a name yet?
jess`: Speaking of family, you're going to be an uncle soon. Boy/girl?
Steve: Girl.
jess`: That's a pretty name!
Steve: Yep!

jess`: Is there a chance later this year for an EP release like Demo 5 that didn't make it on the record?
Steve: We have a lot of different ideas floating around on how to release the songs that didn't make the record. We're not sure exactly how but if everyone's a little patient, they'll see the light of day in some shape but nothing concrete yet.

jess`: Next single?
Steve: Not sure, possibly "Running From The Rain". Possibly "At This Velocity".

jess`: That would be a really cool video, I think.
Steve: "At This Velocity"? Yeah, I think so too.

jess`: When "War All The Time" got banned from MTV, do you think that it affected the sales of the record?
Steve: It definetely made the record cycle a little bit shorter, I think. I don't really know enough about that world to know what it did or didn't do for sales. I mean, I guess logically if it ended the record cycle earlier, then less time for the label to push the record but we just kept touring so we were doing our share.

jess`: How do you think The Hunt is going?
Steve: It's Good!

jess`: Some people hadn't received their prizes yet and wanted me to ask about that..
Steve: I'll look into that stuff takes a while because there always ends up being some miscommunication somewhere in the process but it'll definetely happen. I think everyone just needs to be a little more patient. We're definely a band that's always tried to make good on our word. I know we've had issues in the past where kids were complaining. Sometimes it's a shipping mistake and it's not our fault but we try our best to make good on our promises so they're coming!

jess`: Anything else that you'd like to add?
Steve: Just thanks for listening and we hope to see everyone out on the road again. We'll be out for a while on this record...

jess`: Tell me about 'United Nations'.
Geoff: United Nations is a side project that we haven't been able to get very far because all of us tour with different bands. jess`: Who's we?
Geoff: Me, Daryl Palumbo [from Head Automatica and GlassJAw], Cooper who was in this amazing, amazing band called 'Made Out Of Babies'. He used to be in 'Kiss Goodbye'. He's just amazing. And Alex from Eyeball Records. We've got a bunch of people going through it. It's hard to get it together. We've got three songs written.

jess`: What type of music is it?
Geoff: It's like. Super fast, spazzy grindcore.

jess`: What do you do in the band?
Geoff: Right now, I'm playing guitar. It could change.

jess`: How's that working out?
Geoff: I'm really bad, but like. I've written some really good riffs for it though so it's working. And Daryl is such a sick guitar player that it doesn't matter if I'm kind of bad.

jess`: Do you get help from the guys at all?
Geoff: No, definetely not. They're not psyched. They're like, "Oh, grindcore... Awesome."

jess`: Is anyone else in the band doing anything side project wise?
Geoff: Mandrew over here plays with a lot of different people but I guess none of them are really side projects. Although, him and Tucker have 'Tucker and the Bear Force', which is their jazz fusion band. It's pretty bad, I mean awesome. It's actually way better than United Nations probably.

jess`: We'll see.
Geoff: We'll see.

jess`: What was the inspiration for 'Telegraph Avenue Kiss'?
Geoff: Telegraph Avenue is a place in San Francisco. My wife was living [there] for a while. It's about a few things. It's a song about how difficult love can seem even when it's really good. And it's also about how difficult it is to write about love without making it into like a music box. So the first verse is sort of the image of a music box because once you write about a woman, then suddenly you tend to make her into a dancing ballerina in the middle of the music box and you force them into the song. It's like a form of entrapment. The second verse is about by singing about your own love, you become like a caged bird because in a way, the singing of the song itself lets everyone know what's going on in your life so it's like your trapping someone else and you're trapping yourself. In the end, I wanted to repeat images of spinning because I feel like there's so much that keeps changing when you're in a relationship so I really liked the idea of a merry-go-round that you can't get off. You know you should let go, but you're afraid of what would happen if you did.

jess`: Someone just asked me this earlier today.. since you guys wear the same clothes all the time, are you superheros that have all the same stuff?
Geoff: Oh shit.. Yeah! I never thought of that! I'm like Georgia Man. Yeah.. ::laughs:: I can't find [the Georgia shirt] right now. I'm pretty bummed. I wore the Steamers shirt until it literally ripped in half. I'm pretty bummed about that, but it's going to be in the Hard Rock.

jess`: Do you have a favorite board member?
Geoff: Yeah, I've got a few. I think this is so cheesey because you're right here but you're one.

jess`: WOO!
Geoff: Yeap! 4SidedDie pretty much cracks me up all the time.

jess`: Today's his birthday..
Geoff: Happy birthday, man! But yeah, he kills me. I like him. And uhm.. I don't know, there are so many amazing people that say incredible things that move me on a regular basis. It's hard to name a bunch. It's funny because sometimes you get totally pissed off at people thinking they know you because they've heard your music...

jess`: Tell me about squonk.
Geoff: ::laughs:: Well squonk likes a certain side of Thursday and that's not the only side of Thursday but you kind of have to love him because the side that he loves he really loves and I love that side too. It's just that if we kept remaking that side over and over again, I don't think that we'd feel that we should keep going as a band because.. I don't know. I mean. Will there ever be a version of 'How Long Is The Night' that's better than 'How Long Is The Night'? I don't think there will be. To me, that's EXACTLY what I wanted to say. When I talk to people, I've never said exactly what I want to say. I get awkward and miss the meaning of what I've been trying to say. Finally getting it out was just like..

jess`: closing a chapter?
Geoff: Yeah... just an amazing, beautiful moment in my life. That will always be a Thursday song. We will always play it. Even if there's some shows where we don't, I always want to be able to play that song because it means so much to me. I guess the goal is to write more songs like that. We've written a ton of songs that I'm NOT proud of, total disasters.

jess`: Which ones?
Geoff: A lot of them, you haven't heard because we keep them out. But there are even things on WATT, like "Marches and Manuevers" where I just think, "Meh, I don't know. There's so many good ideas in that song that just didn't turn out right. It just doesn't hit me the way I want it to. It's funny but I think that you have to be willing to fall down because if you don't, you'll never make anything great. That's all I ever dream of. Making something that's really beautiful that touches people the way music touches me. I don't know. Music is just so freeing and that's what I love about it. I've met so many beautiful people through them having a connection... you know?

jess`: Yeah..
Geoff: Anyway Jess, I guess we're going...
